Independent investigations by Reuters and the New York Times found that Johnson and Johnson had known about small amounts of asbestos in its baby powder for decades. The baby powder contains talc, a clay mineral, in powder form. Asbestos can occur naturally near talc. However, J&J did not disclose that to consumers.
Asbestos is a harmful mineral that can lodge in the lungs and cause lung problems. It can also lead to cancer.
One victim, Darlene Coker, suffered from mesothelioma, a rare form of lung cancer caused by exposure to asbestos, after using J&J’s talcum powder her whole life. Many other victims have filed lawsuits against Johnson and Johnson as well. In total, the company faces over 34,000 lawsuits regarding its talcum powder alone, with that number only increasing.
J&J has been part of various cases relating talcum powder, including a $2.1 billion lawsuit involving 22 women. The judge ruled in favor of their claims that the powder caused their ovarian cancer. Many other cases are still pending.
